Kisspeptin (specifically the 10-amino acid C-terminal fragment Kisspeptin-10) is an endogenous neuropeptide encoded by the KISS1 gene. It is the principal upstream activator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, making it a critical research compound for reproductive endocrinology and hormone regulation.
Kisspeptin-10 binds to KISS1R (GPR54) on GnRH neurons in the hypothalamic arcuate and anteroventral periventricular nuclei, triggering pulsatile GnRH release. This drives downstream LH and FSH secretion from the anterior pituitary, stimulating gonadal steroidogenesis. The peptide also plays roles in tumor suppression (Kisspeptin was originally identified as a metastasis suppressor) and modulates sexual arousal-related neural circuits.
Research includes HPG axis regulation, GnRH pulsatility studies, reproductive endocrinology, fertility research, hypogonadism models, KISS1R pharmacology, pubertal timing research, cancer biology (metastasis suppression), and neuroendocrine circuit mapping.
